Getting Your Florida Contractor License

What Florida requires

Questions Florida Contractors Ask

How do you apply for a Florida contractor's license?
Meet the experience requirement. Most license types need four years of experience in your trade, with at least one year as a foreman or supervisor. Pass the state exams. You'll take a trade exam for your license type and a Business and Finance exam. Apply to DBPR. Send your exam results, proof of experience, a credit report, proof of insurance, fingerprints and the state fees. Get the board's decision. The board approves your application, denies it or asks for more information. Tip: Incorrect or insufficient experience is the number one reason applications aren't approved. Start gathering your job details early and make sure they're specific and complete.
How long does it take to get a contractor's license in Florida?
Once your application is submitted to the state, the state's decision typically takes 30–45 days. Your overall timeline also depends on how fast you pass your exams and how complete your application is. After you submit your DBPR application, the board reviews it on its regular meeting schedule. Once it's approved and your fees are paid, your license is issued. The biggest delays come from applications that are incomplete or incorrect. If the board finds missing documents, errors, or experience that isn't clearly documented, it sends a request for more information. Your review stops until you respond, and your application may have to wait for the next board review. One mistake can add weeks or even months to your timeline. Tip: The fastest way to get licensed is to submit a complete, accurate application the first time.
How long does your part take?
Our part usually takes just a few days once we have your work history and documents. The sooner you send them, the sooner we can start. Before anything is filed, we review your full application to catch missing documents, errors and experience gaps. Those are the problems that most often delay approval. With Plus and Pro, we also handle everything after you apply. We submit your application, track its progress and respond to the board for you. You'll get status updates until the state makes its decision. Note: Once your application is submitted, the rest of the timeline depends on the state's review.
Do I still have to take the exam?
Yes. This service handles the license application, not the exam. If you have not passed yet, your specialist can line up exam prep and application work so you do not lose time between them.
What happens if my application is rejected?
If the board flags something we prepared, we correct it and resubmit at no added service charge, for as long as your service period runs. State fees on a resubmission are still the state's. If the problem is outside the application, your specialist explains it and gives you the next step.
Is the $99 consultation really credited back?
Yes. The full $99 comes off any package on this page. If you stop after the consultation, you keep the plan and recommendations.
Can I start with APS and upgrade later?
Yes. Pay the difference and we take over the remaining work. You do not pay twice for the same service.
What's not included in Plus?
The exam and its fees, your general liability and workers' compensation insurance, and any bond the board requires for your license type. The single price covers everything in the application process itself: fingerprinting, credit report and state application fee.
What happens after I'm licensed? Do you help with renewals?
Yes. Once you're licensed the state starts a recurring calendar: renewal every two years, 14 hours of continuing education, and insurance certificates whenever a GC asks. The Sunbiz annual report must be submitted between January 1 and May 1 of each year, and it's required every year even if nothing about the business has changed.
