Know Your Exam

The Florida Unlimited Electrical Contractor examination has two parts and you must pass both with 75%: Business (50 questions, 2½ hours) and Technical/Safety (100 questions, 5 hours). Both are open book.

Key trade focus: electrical theory and principles, NEC navigation and calculations, wiring methods and protection, special occupancies, plan and specification reading, plus OSHA and safety, life safety and ADA, and alarm and limited-energy systems.

Do I need the state certified licence, or can I register locally?
A certified Unlimited Electrical Contractor licence comes from passing the state ECLB exam and lets you work anywhere in Florida. Registration is based on a local certificate of competency and only lets you work in the county or city that issued it. Gold Coast prepares you for both exams.
What is the best Florida Unlimited Electrical Contractor exam prep option for a first-time test taker?

What is the difference between standard books and exam-ready books?
Standard books are the required references without professional preparation. Exam-ready books include professional tabbing and highlighting where that option is offered, helping you locate information faster while studying and on exam day.
Can I study online or by Livestream?
Yes. Gold Coast offers flexible live and on-demand learning options depending on the program, so you can prepare around your work schedule.
How long do I have access to the course?
Gold Coast contractor exam-prep tuition includes one full year of course access.
What happens if I fail one exam section?
Because the licensing exam is divided into separate parts, you generally retake the part you did not pass rather than repeating sections you already passed, subject to Florida’s current exam rules and score-validity requirements.
What experience do I need for the Florida Unlimited Electrical Contractor license?
You need to meet just one of five pathways, for example three years of management experience in the trade within the last six years, or four years as a foreman, supervisor or contractor within the last eight. And at least 40% of your experience must be three phase work. The full list is on our requirements page.
What financial requirements are there?
The Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board looks at financial responsibility rather than a credit score. A certified electrical contractor application needs a business financial statement showing a net worth of at least $10,000, prepared within the last twelve months, plus a personal and a business credit report. The board reviews bankruptcies, unsatisfied judgments, tax liens and credit history, there is no minimum FICO score and no financial responsibility course requirement.

Are all the required references in the book set?
Almost. Two of the approved references, UL 681 and UL 365, are supplied only by the state, free, as PDFs. Once DBPR has approved your exam application, email your name and candidate ID to ElectricalContractors.Reference@myfloridalicens e.com and make one combined request for both. Everything else you need is in the book set.
